Sunday

Just a few funny moments from my parents' house on Sunday.

1. We were talking with my brother and his wife about the fact that my hair is super-duper long right now and they were asking if I kept it long for Royce. I said that yes, Royce likes it long; also, I never like the way it looks when it is short. I added that Mom and Dad get mad at me when I cut it. To confirm this, when Dad came in the room a couple of minutes later, I casually said, "Dad, I'm thinking of cutting my hair short. What do you think?" Mom suddenly appeared from the other room and said, "Don't you dare!!!" Confirmed--my parents actually really do care what I do with my hair.

2. We were watching some old home videos and apparently I was attention-starved as a 7-year old. Christmas Eve as Dad was panning the dinner table, you could hear my high (very high) little voice saying, "Dad, take a picture of me! Dad, dad, take a picture of me!" Then when he started filming me and asked me a question, I wouldn't talk. Christmas morning, that high voice again carried above the general din with things like, "I got a toothbrush" and "Look at my Barbie . . . my Cabbage Patch Doll . . . my earrings." (Hey, at least I was grateful.) But the most classic moment was on my mom's birthday. As Dad was trying to film Mom opening gifts and talking about how she was sick from the KFC she ate earlier, I repeatedly called out, "Look at me Dad! I'm playing with tape!" "Dad, take a picture of me, I'm playing with tape!" "Stop taking pictures of everyone else Dad, take a picture of me." "I'm playing with tape!" Bless my Dad, he was actually pretty accommodating.

Really?

I had a student in my office today who was trying to discreetly text on his phone while I was explaining his program requirements. Really?! There is nothing more obvious than someone texting and trying to appear to be listening (especially if they're only two feet away). We know your lap isn't that interesting. At least be courteous enough to only try when there are at least 3 people in the room; if I'm really tired, I might be so distracted by your neighbor's sequin shirt or grown-out roots that I won't notice.
